Podcast Episode 5: Trauma at the Border

This episode of The Steward Project Podcast is a bit impromptu. I recorded it in a fit of rage over what the US is doing by separating children from their parents at the US/Mexico border.

So let’s talk about what’s happening on our southern border. The separation of families, specifically separation of children from their parents, is causing severe trauma. What does this mean? In this episode, I share briefly about what is meant when people say “these kids are being traumatized” and share a few tips on self-care as we fight these despicable actions.

This is a short episode and my apologies that the audio seems a bit distorted...but I hope you can feel where I'm coming from with this offering.

Talking about trauma is easy but I wanted to share a bit deeper so you really have an understanding of what we mean when we say "these kids are being traumatized". The fear that they are enduring, without any respite since staff are not allowed to comfort the children, is being encoded into their brains and nervous systems. Their little brains and bodies are awash in adrenaline and cortisol without any release...and this will have physical/physiological impacts on them for years to come. THIS is the trauma we're talking about. And we haven't even begun to talk about the generational trauma that is being encoded in the young girls who are being traumatized.
