Podcast Episode 16: Radical Self-Care Reality Check

May 13, 2019

In this episode of The Steward Project podcast, I'm going there.  It's time for a Reality Check.  I'm sharing the reasons we need to focus on Radical Self-Care and why I feel the time is NOW to prioritize this work.

If we get right down to it...Helpers, Healers and Change-makers are DYING.

Burn-Out, Vicarious Trauma, and Compassion Fatigue are literally killing us.  Either by stressing us out, causing very real health issues, or by breaking our hearts resulting in suicide... yes, suicide.  The suicide rates for those of us in the Helping, Healing and Change-making fields are alarming and need to be addressed directly.

Did you know...

  • Burn-out is at an all-time high in professions of Helping, Healing & Change-making;

  • Burn-out has been designated as a legitimate medical diagnosis and will be added to the International Classification of Disease (ICD) in January 2022;

  • Agencies are facing up to 70% turn-over rate due to burn-out;

  • First responders are 4x more likely to die by suicide than on the job, Doctors and residents are seeing a rise in suicides, and Activists are also seeing an increase in suicide deaths;

  • Burn-out and Vicarious Trauma TRANSFORM our brains and bodies, making burn-out RADICAL...and our self-care must be just as RADICAL to meet our needs;

  • Radical Self-Care is the only appropriate response to the Radical work we do and the Radical way burn-out transforms us.

How do these facts resonate for you?  Are you in a profession where illness or suicide has occurred and if so, how was it handled?

Thank you so much for listening to this episode and THANK YOU for subscribing to The Steward Project podcast!  Until next time...
